Joining The Cult - An Ideology

E-mail Print PDF

The Cult product line came into existence from Vision in 2009 based on a simple idea. Why not make a rod that can cast powerfully, and yet not be difficult to cast. That does not mean there is no place for a fast, tip action rod with tight timing that can cast a ton of line. (The new Mag as an example, but we will talk about that another time). There should be a middle ground, so Vision made one. The SH Cult rods were introduced and won anglers over with deep, smooth actions with a surprising reserve of power. The next logical step was to take it into the Two Handed rod series, and the results were impressive.

The Cult DH series has been applauded by anglers all over the world since their introduction in 2010. The deep action and forgiving timing have made them one of the most versatile two handed rods on the market today. Equally at home with Scandi or Skagit lines and giving the angler a lot of versatility because the Cult's action gives it a wide range of line weights for each rod in the range. So depending on your personal taste, your experience as a caster, whatever the reason, the Cult rods can adjust as you do. They won the Chasing Silver Magazine Salmon rod shootout for a reason, scoring high in all categories. In Canada they continue to grow a following. A Cult like one you might say.

So 2011 saw the introduction of the new Vision Switch series of rods, as well as the Switch And Salt rods. Once again using the Cult ideology and design process, the Switch rods have that recognizable Cult action and the full rod loading that Cults are known for, in the smaller Switch package. Now smaller waters can see Cult rods, and anglers who prefer switch rods can have the same versatility in their Switch arsenal. 10'11" in length, they are compact, old school casting action, with modern casting power.

For 2012 there will be two new Cult DH rods, the 15" and 17'8" for those who like their two handed rods hard core. In the mean time, the Cult legend continues to grow.

Celebrating Finnish Fly Fishing Heritage - The Renfors Arrives

E-mail Print PDF

In 1870, Finnish machinist Herman Renfors started to make lures and other fishing equipment in the town of Kajaani, Finland. In his time, he had 50 patents for inventions and was a leader in the manufacturing industry in Finland. His sister Maria traveled to England to learn the art of Classic fly tying and brought it back to Finland with her. Renfors products eventually were sold in countries  throughout the world, and his fly reels, well known even in the USA and Japan, are collectibles to this day, with some even still in use.

So in 2012, Vision has decided to pay tribute to that Finnish tradition and heritage, with the Vision Renfors reel. It is the classic style fly reel, brought into the modern day. The Renfors has the design elements of heritage reels, for both form and function. Ported holes for that classic look, and for less weight, Brass parts for both design and longevity. A wooden reel handle to complete the package. Underneath all of that is Vision's most proven and reliable drag system. Using Carbon and Stainless Steel discs, the sealed brake system is both incredibly strong, and incredibly smooth. One other advantage of stepping back in the era of design, is line capacity versus reel size. There are two ways to increase capacity on a spool. Make it wider, or make it deeper. The Renfors has a deep, shallow arbor spool. It allows for a large amount of backing, as well as the fly line, without increasing the width of the reel.

It doesn't end there though. A sound that has been less common on the rivers for some years now, makes an impressive return. Line pulling from the reel brings that magical click sound that many older anglers will recognize right away. The sound is truly addictive. It is the indication to all in the area that a large fish has been hooked, and the game has begun.

The Renfors is available as the Renfors 3, a 7/9 weight reel, and the Renfors 4, a 9/11 weight reel. Both can take their line weight in a Spey line, and hold 183 meters of 30lb backing. The Renfors will be at home on Cane rods, or new modern Carbon rods. Single hand rods, or double hand rods. Expect to see them on the quest for Salmon, Steelhead and more on waters across Canada in 2012.
